This year we will focus upon the foundations of our political tradition and the rich diversity of cultures we see around us today. Immigrants came here to pursue their dreams of becoming landowners, to escape religious persecution or recreate a society based upon the feudal system. Many ideas and systems from Europe were transplanted into America's colonial societies. When the Constitution was written, the rights of equality, liberty and the pursuit of happiness were applied to a small percentage of the population. Yet as time has progressed our political values became more inclusive of diverse populations, while social values remained based upon European customs. Would the inconsistencies between "...equality before the law" and social values based upon race ever be able to co-exist harmoniously within one nation?
